BSP's Africa & Madagascar Program
Armed Conflict and the Environment Project
Finding ways to mitigate the impacts of armed
conflict on African biodiversity.
The BSP’s Armed Conflict and the Environment project aimed
to identify and raise awareness about the negative impacts of armed
conflict on the environment, and develop concrete strategies for mitigating
these impacts before, during, and after conflict. Activities included case studies;
promotion of collaboration among the conservation, humanitarian, and development sectors;
analysis of mitigation opportunities; organization of a pan-African workshop in Zimbabwe
to share experiences and lessons of conservation in areas of conflict across sub-Saharan
Africa; organization of a workshop in Democratic
Republic of Congo on 'Preparing for Peace'; and production of an impact mitigation guide.
Participating countries included Central African Republic (CAR), Republic of Congo (Brazzaville),
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone.
