BSP's Africa & Madagascar Program

Environmental Governance in East and Southern Africa

Developing conceptual contexts and analytical frameworks for consultative processes and policy reform.

The Environmental Governance project's objectives were: (1) to develop a conceptual understanding of environmental governance that is based on the priorities and specific situation of East and Southern African (ESA) countries, (2) to analyze key governance issues in environmental management in the ESA region, (3) to develop a research agenda, and (4) to build a consultative process with policy-makers to create a public forum for debate. Implemented by the African Centre for Technology Studies, the project established a framework for policy research on environmental governance issues intended to generate options for policy reform that support sustainable management of natural resources in the ESA region. Participating countries included Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
