Conservation Impact Grants Program
From 1991 to 1996, the BSP Conservation Impact Grants (CIG) program
funded applied, field-based conservation research. The CIG program
was designed to have real site-based conservation impacts, build local
capacity for conducting basic conservation research, and share lessons-learned
across the globe in order to help others do conservation better.
BSP awarded small grants of up to $15,000 on a competitive basis to
researchers in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Madagascar,
Asia and the Pacific, and Eastern Europe. BSP supported
a wide spectrum of conservation research that included many academic
fields such as biology, ecology, economics, anthropology, sociology,
and public health. Although making awards under this program
ended in 1996, many projects are in their final stages of analysis and
will be completed by the end of 2000.
Results
To foster information exchange and extend the impact of the Conservation
Impacts Grant program, a complete listing of final technical reports
was distributed to all participants. This dissemination encourages
networking not only among research grantees within regions and among
researchers working on similar topics, but also across regions and themes.
BSP grants have also helped to create in-country scientific expertise,
funding projects in regions where organizations and individuals would
have otherwise lacked sufficient resources to conduct research.
Lesson Learned
Establish mentor contacts for grantees: BSP staff responsible
for managing the small grants quickly and thoroughly learned the importance
of establishing mentor contacts for grantees. Originally, BSP
staff intended to internally review all technical reports received.
The shortcomings of this procedure soon became apparent. BSP staff
simply did not possess sufficient expertise across the vast array of
submitted research topics. So, staff members matched each grantee
with a contact person having expertise in the grantee’s research area
and thus capable of critiquing the study’s methods. Mentors reviewed
grantee reports and provided constructive guidance for the duration
of each Conservation Impact Grant project.
