EPA Study Reinforces Importance of Protecting Bristol Bay

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Dave Aplin, director of outreach for WWF’s Arctic programs, in response to today's EPA release of its Bristol Bay watershed assessment detailing the impacts of the potentially disastrous Pebble Mine:

“EPA has said it before and today said it again: Pebble Mine is just a bad idea. Based on a thorough analysis of the best information available, this scientifically rigorous study unequivocally demonstrates the large-scale risks and losses associated with the potential development of Pebble Mine.

“The study confirms the sentiment of local fishermen and communities who have long said that even under the best case scenario, Pebble Mine would destroy miles of irreplaceable salmon and wildlife habitat.

“Based on the sheer strength of this science, EPA should immediately use its Clean Water Act authority to protect Bristol Bay from the threats of large-scale mining.”
