Latest Red List Update Highlights Threatened Species

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement today related to the latest update of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

“The IUCN Red List update serves as a sober reminder that conservation needs more of our energy to reverse the extinction trend that too many species face because of human activities,” said Director, Species Conservation Program, WWF, Dr. Barney Long.

“This latest Red List release includes some inspiring examples that demonstrate that conservation does work and that when we invest the correct level of resources we can recover species. However, too many species are threatened with extinction and unless we resolve to reduce threats to their populations, such as habitat loss, poaching, over harvesting and climate change, we will continue to empty our land and oceans of species.”
